Ka‘u fire burns 60 acres

A fire in a deep ravine on Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut property in Ka‘u has burned approximately 60 acres since it ignited Friday morning, according to the Hawaii County Fire Department.

County firefighters and a National Park Service crew are monitoring the “smoldering” fire, which has been confined to brush and trees in and along the edge of the ravine, located on Lower Moaula Road and Highway 11. They are using various resources to prevent any spreading, as well as maintaining fire breaks and addressing hot spots.
